Roof Rack Symphony

When the salesdude said
the cheaper rack might whistle,
he did not say we would
be followed by songbirds
everywhere we went.

And when he said
the rack might whistle,
he did not tell us we would
be followed by the gleeful
howls of ghosts from
highway to home.

And when he said
the rack might whistle,
we did not stop to think
about the song of hope
we carry in a roof rack
filled with camping gear.

i just love this. it's so poignant and full of imagination, and so just full. i found myself, reading, there in the car laughing or gasping at each new discovery of the roof rack's voice.

that said (you knew there was a "but" - i have incorrigible "but" face), i'd change the 3rd stanza and continue the metaphorical voice - the first 2/3 are more lyrical and evocative than this revelation of the truth. i like the way "we did not stop to think" scans, though, and "about the song of hope" - maybe you can keep those lines but change the context?

deux centimes …

can i just say that it's a tragedy that - some day - i'm going to die without ever having the opportunity to put "salesdude" on a resume? bummer.
