as each event in my day presents itself,
i ask it: will you be my poem?
brave sun struggling through a film of gray haze,
is there a metaphor in you?
the impending doom of a hot, dry throat, help me
find your allusion. biblical or literary will do.
my wife and child, my daily habits and routines,
will you be symbolic for just one more day?
and as each event in my day presents itself,
it tells me no. and no. and no.
sometimes, the only way to write your poem
is to just shut up and live it.

i feel like there's a lesson in this poem for me.
(maybe i should go listen to "you're so vain" for a while, then come back and re-comment !)
in any case, i like what you say here. the dailiness as valentine. sometimes it's inspiration. most of the time, work.
btw and totally not à propos here … but of interest anyway … i heard edward hirsch interviewed on NPR this afternoon. he has a new book of poetry out, called _Special Orders_. the book as a whole is a kind of journey through the "geography of self" and touches on theology, love, fatherhood, son-hood (?), and becoming oneself in the world.
hirsch's is the second book by a favorite poet to come out in 2 months … the other is marie howe's _The Kingdom of Ordinary Time_ that came out in feb i think. also worth looking into when you get a chance. :)
happy new week …
i'm glad you found a lesson here. i thought i was just out of ideas. ;)
btw, thanks for the poetry recommendations!
