This morning, Wrig made her own board game. It's complex - not Calvinball complex, but complex nonetheless. It involves toothpicks, googly-eyes, and a pack of cards that Wrigley drew herself.
Now, despite her genetic predisposition, I'm pretty sure Wrigley is not going to grow up to be an artist. She enjoys drawing, yes, and loves to post her art about the house, but I haven't seen any particular flashes of brilliance (unless you're a big fan of Pollock or Picasso). Granted, she is six and I'm hypercritical, but I don't see gallery shows in Wrig's future.
All that said, the 13 cards she made for her game are brilliant. Not for their artistic excellence, but for Wrig's clever details. She drew a dog and a cat. The difference? The picture of a dog has a slobbery tongue hanging out of its mouth. The difference between a duck and a chicken? The chicken has a bunch of feathers. The pig has a curly tail. She also drew habitats for her farm animals. Her pig pen looks like a flattened circle. The horse pasture looks like a pig pen, but Wrig added vertical lines for fenceposts. The chicken coop looks like a horse pasture, but Wrig added horizontal lines to turn fenceposts into chicken wire.
Christie was just reading an article about how kids often notice details that adults miss. Wrig may not be an artist, but she sure does have an artist's eye.
And PS: Her game was really fun!

this morning i was telling jason, "i know that EVERYONE thinks their kid is a genius, but don't you think eli is like, REALLY a genius? and also an athletic prodigy? i mean, he can say so many words! and shoot a basketball hoop from like 4 feet away!" immediately after i told him that, eli was sitting on his bike and almost toppled over the handlebars trying to pick up his ball that had landed in front of the bike, so basically he just proved me wrong.
anyway, all i meant to say was that art is basically a matter of effort, and if wrigley likes to draw all the time, then she will probably get pretty good at it.
and also eli points to his shoelaces and says "BIRD!" which i think is pretty brilliant. talk about a detail an adult would never notice!
i mean seriously guys, can we find a way to make this about ME and MY KID already?
it's funny, we'll go through these phases when we're positive wrig is the smartest kid in the whole wide world, and then we'll go through these phases where we think she's just a kid, just like everybody else.
ultimately, all kids ARE brilliant (especially eli ;) - see, this is about you and your kid). think of all the stuff they have to figure out in such a short time.

dude i know, kids are so MINDBLOWING. it's like they just go from crapping all over themselves and making no sense to screaming "HOOP!" when the basketball game comes on.
p.s. duh wrig is really smart though
